Shopify Tax files its last returns for sales made up to 31 December 2026. Here is what that means for your store, and why the right replacement is more than a cheaper return.
Shopify is ending automated sales tax filing. It will file returns for sales made up to 31 December 2026, and then it stops. For most merchants, the last return Shopify files is the one due in January 2027. New York sellers get one extra quarter, through February 2027.
Shopify Tax will still calculate tax at checkout. What goes away is the part that keeps you out of trouble: preparing the return, filing it and paying the state on time. From 2027, that is back on your desk unless a filing partner like VAT IT picks it up.
A few things to do before the year ends:
You may have seen Shopify’s announcement, which points merchants to two filing services, Numeral and Zamp, both with switching offers. Here is how their offers compare with ours, side by side.
Offer details from each provider's published Shopify page, October 2026.
Free months, then a lower rate. The closest offer also starts with three free months, then charges $45 to $65 per state per month. Ours continues at a $40 monthly retainer per state.
Much more than a discount. Zamp doesn’t list any extras, and Numeral adds a single consultation call. Ours takes over your registrations, includes a global assessment of your digital services, syncs your sales history and moves your registrations, filing calendars and state portal access across for you.
More time to decide. Numeral’s offer closes on 30 November 2026, just as year-end gets busy. Ours runs until 31 January 2027.
Why us over Numeral: Numeral is software first, with specialists for complex cases and support by chat and email. With us, a specialist checks every return before it’s filed, and your account manager is a named person who knows your business. Numeral also charges per return: a monthly filer pays $600 a state a year at the $50 offer price, or $900 at $75. Our $40 monthly retainer per state ($480 a year) works out lower.
Price per return isn’t the whole story: Quarterly or annual filers may pay less with Numeral’s per-filing fee. Our retainer pays for a true global managed service: our platform and AI do the heavy lifting, and our specialists check every return across US Sales Tax, VAT and GST in 100+ jurisdictions. Prefer to pay per filing? Let’s chat. We can offer that too.
Expert access isn’t an upgrade: On Numeral, direct access to experts, VDAs and global VAT sits on its custom-priced top plan. Yet notices, VDAs, audits and multi-tax nexus are exactly where reviewers say you still need a person. With VAT IT, specialists are part of the service from day one.
Why us over Zamp: Zamp is built around US Sales Tax. If you sell into the UK or EU, or already hold VAT registrations, we bring your US Sales Tax and global VAT into one platform and one team. We also take over your existing registrations at no cost.
Look beyond the introductory offer: Discounts end. Your provider stays. Choose a partner with the tech and the people to work as an extension of your business. That’s VAT IT.
When you replace Shopify’s filing, do you just want another button that files returns? Or do you want a team that knows your business?
A lower price gets you through the first few months. After that, two things matter: getting every return right, and having one provider that can follow you when you sell beyond the US.
One platform, US and global: VAT IT turns all your sales data into prepared returns for US Sales Tax, VAT and GST, on one filing calendar across 100+ tax jurisdictions. You don’t need one provider for the US, another for the UK and a third for the EU.
Running more than one store? Nexus thresholds can count everything your company sells into a state, not what each store sells on its own. Our platform pulls every store into one view, so your nexus monitoring covers everything you sell.
What that covers in practice:
Real people, not a ticket number: Every client gets a dedicated account manager who knows your products, states and filing calendar, backed by specialists with 25+ years of indirect tax experience across more than 15,000 clients. Software can file a return, but it won’t notice when your business changes and the return should change with it. Our team will.
Most switching offers stop at a discount per return. Ours comes with the whole move:
When does Shopify stop filing sales tax?
Shopify Tax automated filing covers sales made up to 31 December 2026. For most merchants, the last return Shopify files is the one due in January 2027. New York quarterly filers get one extra quarter (December 2026 to February 2027), with that return due in March 2027.
Will Shopify Tax still calculate sales tax at checkout?
Yes. Shopify Tax keeps calculating tax at checkout. What stops is preparing the return, filing it and paying the state on time. From 2027, that is your responsibility unless a filing partner takes it over.
What should I do about returns marked “Not filed”?
Shopify won’t file returns marked “Not filed”, so you need to file them yourself or hand them to your new provider. When you switch to VAT IT, we flag any “Not filed” returns as part of your exposure review.
How long can I download my Shopify filing records?
You can download your Shopify filing records until 30 April 2027. Download them before the year ends so your audit trail stays complete.
Do multiple Shopify stores count together for sales tax nexus?
They can. Nexus thresholds can count everything your company sells into a state, not what each store sells on its own. If you run several Shopify stores under one company, you need to track sales across all of them. VAT IT pulls every store into one view for nexus monitoring.
What does VAT IT’s Shopify switching offer include?
Sign up with VAT IT before 31 January 2027 and your first three months of sales tax filings are free of charge. We also take over your existing registrations at no cost, give you a complimentary global assessment of your digital services, sync your historical data and handle the full migration.
