This guide provides an overview of e-Invoicing requirements in Mexico, including the legal framework, the use of the Comprobante Fiscal Digital por Internet (CFDI) platform, compliance obligations, and key reporting considerations. It is intended to assist businesses that issue or receive invoices for transactions subject to Mexican Value Added Tax (IVA).
Mexico is a pioneer in e-invoicing in LATAM, introducing electronic invoicing voluntarily in 2004 and making it fully mandatory in 2014. The system is based on CFDI (Comprobante Fiscal Digital por Internet), which are structured XML digital tax receipts subject to real-time validation.
The system operates under a clearance Continuous Transaction Control (CTC) model, where invoices must be validated by the Mexican tax authority (SAT) or an accredited certification provider (PAC) before being legally issued. CFDI 4.0 became the mandatory version from 1 April 2023. Mexico’s regime covers domestic and cross-border transactions and requires digital sealing via government-issued certificates.
Mexico’s e-Invoicing mandate is fully active.
