Registratie is verplicht voor alle bedrijven die belastbare activiteiten uitvoeren in Ecuador, ongeacht een drempelbedrag.
BTW-registratie voor niet-gevestigde bedrijven is optioneel als zij digitale diensten leveren.
Elk bedrijf dat bij de belastingdienst (SRI) voor de IVA is geregistreerd, kan de voorbelasting terugvorderen.
Exporteurs krijgen vaak extra terugvorderingsrechten, aangezien exporten onder het nultarief vallen.

Terugbetalingen voor exporteurs of gevallen met een overschot aan kredieten kunnen 1 tot 3 maanden in beslag nemen, afhankelijk van de beoordeling door SRI.
Routinematige terugvorderingen voor gewone belastingbetalers worden meestal toegepast als kredieten in plaats van contante terugbetalingen.
